Tongue Tie Assessment in Ojai: What Parents Should Know

If your baby is struggling to latch, clicking during feeds, or not transferring milk well, a tethered oral tissue (commonly known as a tongue tie or lip tie) could be part of the picture.

But getting a clear answer isn’t always straightforward. Many families in Ojai and Ventura County find themselves bouncing between providers who see only one piece of the puzzle: a lactation consultant who evaluates the latch, a pediatrician who glances under the tongue, or a dentist who recommends a release. No single perspective tells the whole story.

Why the IBCLC + OT lens matters

At Moonhaven, tongue tie and lip tie assessments are performed by a provider who is both a board-certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) and a licensed occupational therapist (OT). This dual training means we evaluate not just whether a tie is present, but how it’s affecting the full feeding system: latch mechanics, suck pattern, jaw movement, body tension, head positioning, and sensory responses.

A tongue tie doesn’t exist in isolation. A baby with a restricted frenulum may also have tension through the neck and jaw, limited head rotation, or a disorganized suck pattern that won’t resolve with a release alone. Identifying these connected issues upfront helps families avoid unnecessary procedures and ensures that when a release is needed, the baby is set up for the best possible outcome.

What an in-home assessment looks like

Moonhaven’s oral tie assessments take place in your home, where your baby is most comfortable. A typical visit includes observation of a full breastfeeding or bottle feeding session, an oral motor evaluation using standardized assessment tools, evaluation of body tension and postural patterns, a detailed discussion of findings and what they mean for your baby’s feeding, and if indicated, referrals to trusted providers in the Ventura County area for release procedures, bodywork, or further evaluation.

We don’t rush to recommend intervention. Some babies with visible ties feed beautifully; others without an obvious restriction struggle significantly. The goal is always function over anatomy: understanding how your baby’s mouth and body are working together, and building a care plan that reflects what’s actually happening at the breast or bottle.

When to seek an assessment

Consider an oral tie evaluation if your baby has difficulty latching or staying latched, you’re experiencing persistent nipple pain despite positioning adjustments, your baby makes clicking sounds during feeding, feeds are taking significantly longer than expected, your baby isn’t gaining weight well despite frequent nursing, or you’ve been told “the latch looks fine” but feeding still hurts.
